Abstract: | People with prostate cancer who have had radical prostatectomy surgery need appropriate self- management behaviors to control the symptoms of the disease and prevent possible complications. Health literacy is an important factor affecting self-management. This correlative descriptive research aimed to explore health literacy, self-management behaviors and the association between health literacy and self-management behaviors in persons with prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy surgery. The 85 participants were the persons with prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy who visited at the urological surgery outpatient unit of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital and Sawanpracharak Hospital from July to November 2021. Research instruments included a demographic data recording form, a health literacy questionnaire, and a self-management behaviors questionnaire in persons with prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy surgery. Descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that: 1. The participants had a high level of overall health literacy, with an average score of 42.37 (S.D. = 6.43). When considering each aspect, it was found that functional literacy and interactive literacy were at a high level, with the average scores of 17.05 (S.D. = 2.86) and 15.05 (S.D. = 2.86) respectively, while critical literacy was at a moderate level, with an average score of 10.27 (S.D. = 2.67). 2. The participants had a high level of overall self-management behaviors, with an average score of 82.83 (S.D. = 6.98). When considering each aspect, it was found that medical management, role management and emotional management were at a high level, with the average scores of 62.52 (S.D. = 5.33), 12.08 (S.D. = 1.55) and 8.24 (S.D. = 1.48) respectively. 3. Health literacy had a positive correlation with self-management behaviors in persons with prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy surgery at a moderate level with statistical significance (r=.566,p<.01). The results of this study can be used as guidelines for health literacy enhancement planning for persons with prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy surgery to promote efficient self-management behaviors. |
