Abstract: First-time fathers are key people caring for their wives and neonates. They are dedicated and do their best to look after their wives’ health and assist their wives in caring for the neonates, especially after work and during the nighttime. However, first-time fathers’ lack of experience and the overwhelming adaptation may contribute to sleep deprivation and alter sleep quality. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to describe sleep quality among first-time fathers and to describe the relationship between age, health status, stress, the perception of infant’s communicated behavior, and sleep quality among first-time fathers. The 112 participants were selected according to the inclusion criteria which consisted of first-time fathers aged 18 years old or above who took their wives to the 4-6 week postpartum check-up at the family planning unit of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital and the family planning unit at Health Promotion Center Region 1 Chiang Mai between September 2022 and April 2023. The research instruments included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), translated into Thai by Tullaya Sitasuwan et al. (2014); the Suanprung Stress Test-20 by Suwat Mahatnirunkul et al. (1997); and the Perception of Infant’s Communicated Behavior by Nuttaya Onpiw et al. (2017). Descriptive statistics, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and point biserial correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that:1. The participants had a global PSQI score with a mean score of 6.68 (S.D. = 2.69). The group identified poor sleep quality. 2. Most of the participants had a global PSQI score which indicated that 59.83 had poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5) while 40.17 had good sleep quality (PSQI ≤ 5). 3. Stress had a significant positive correlation with poor sleep quality (rs = .334, p < .001), and perception of infant’s communicated behavior had a significant negative correlation with poor sleep quality (rpb = -.231, p < .05). 4. Age and health status were not significantly correlated with sleep quality. The findings from this study can be used as baseline data for planning nursing care to promote sleep quality in first-time fathers.
