Abstract: | The study “The Assessment of Academic Positioning Processes of Chiang Mai University” aimed to 1) investigate the problems and obstacles of the academic positioning processes of Chiang Mai University, and 2) examine guidelines for supporting the academic positioning processes of Chiang Mai University. In terms of data collection methods for this qualitative study, the work processes were reviewed and in-depth interviews were conducted. The study included 16 participants from 4 groups consisting of 6 faculty members, 6 department-level officials, 2 strategic planning administrators, and 2 university-level officials. Also, content analysis was employed to analyze the related literature and the data from the academic positioning processes and the interviews. The data revealed that 1. problems and obstacles in the process of applying for academic positions were that the applicants for academic positions lacked understanding of the process of applying for positions, such as preparing documents for application, academic work for the submission, a lack of understanding of the rules and regulations used for applying for academic positions, etc. 2. the data also suggested guidelines for promoting and improving the application processes in accordance with the university's management guidelines consisting of 5 approaches as follows: (1) understanding among faculty members about applying for positions in terms of criteria for applying for positions and career advancement should be created by organizing workshops to generate understanding at the university and department level including creating a network for collaboration between departments to find useful ways, (2) motivation and support for academic positioning in producing academic work, and promote the process of academic positioning should be provided so that the academic work would benefit the academic community and the number of works published in leading journals having high citation as an indicator of the academic potential of the university, (3) the direction of academic work of faculty members should be clear or have a variety of fields of study by taking into account the broad benefits and review work processes so that faculty members could rapidly grow academically including personnel development process to create high performance workforce, (4) the University must establish a central process in order to share the same standards by revising the academic positioning standards, and (5) the University must review the work process and determine the scope of the process for the academic positioning to be fast and efficient Including being an organization that consists of modern knowledge and modifying the working style to be more flexible. In addition, the support process for efficient work processes can be divided into 7 approaches, including (1) Applicants for academic positions should be informed of the procedures, paperwork, and academic work to be submitted for academic positioning. (2) Standardized criteria used for the selection of qualified reviewers should be considered. (3) Department staff should be trained, by the central unit with help and support, to have the knowledge and abilities to help make the process of applying for academic positions more efficient. (4) Academic positioning system should be updated according to actual progress and the academic positioning application system should be improved to show clear operation process details. (5) A system that can allow the reviewers to assess the academic work in an online format should be created. (6) Each department should create more incentives and provide more support for academic positioning for faculty members. (7) There should be standards for academic positioning, and the standards should be reviewed and revised to be clearer. |
