Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the discourse in Chinese textbooks through two sets of Chinese as a foreign language textbooks "Developing Chinese" and "New Practical Chinese Reader" published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press, which are used in higher education teaching in Chiang Mai province. The results of the study show that the discourses in the Chinese language textbooks for foreigners shape the image of power in China. The image of China shaped by the discourse can be divided into three main aspects. One is the image of China as "promoting and developing culture" through the discourse of "cultural card", and the other is the image of China as "virtuous" through the discourse of "ethics", the third is to shape the image of China as a "unified multi-ethnic country" by creating the discourse of "unity'. These three images are interco onnected, and foreigners can see that the Chinese govern nment is portraying China as a culturally diverse, developing, virtuous, and unified multi-ethnic country.
