Abstract: | Constipation is a c common symptom found in immobilized patients. This quasi-experimental study utilized a two-group post-test only design. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of the Constipation Prevention Program on constipation oceurrence in immobilized patients. The sample included 34 immobilized patients. There were 17 subjects in both the control and experimental group who were matched by age and level of constipation risk. Research instruments were the Constipation Prevention Program and the Bowel Elimination Record Form, which were developed by Budpanya (2011). Descriptive statistics and the Fisher's exact test were used for data analysis. The results revealed that: There was a statistically significant difference in constipation occurrence (p <.001) in the control and the experimental group. Only 1 out of 17 subjects in the experimental group had constipation as compared to all 17 subjects in the control group. The research findings confirm that the Constipation Prevention Program can prevent constipation occurrence in immobilized patients. Nurses could apply the program as part of routine care of immobilized patients for constipation prevention. |
