Abstract: Proper family management among caregivers of children with congenital heart disease after cardiac surgery at home may help children recover faster. The objective of this correlational descriptive research was to examine factors related to family management among caregivers of children with congenital heart disease after cardiac surgery. The conceptual framework was based on Family Management Measure (FaMM) (Knafl et al., 2012) combined with a review of literature. The samples, selected purposively, were 85 caregivers of children aged 1 to 6 years old who came for a follow- up visit at the pediatric out-patient department at least 2 weeks after cardiac surgery. Data were collected in 3 hospitals in northern Thailand and a Heart Center in northeastern Thailand from May to November 2020. The research instruments included the Social Support Questionnaire and the Family Management Measure. All of the questionnaires were tested for reliability.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Eta Coefficient, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient. Findings revealed that: 1. The total mean scores of family management of caregivers were at a moderate level (X̅ = 136.85, SD = 12.09). The mean score of each of dimension was also at a moderate level: child’s daily life (x̅ = 18.26, SD = 3.05), condition management ability (X̅ = 42.67, SD = 5.65), condition management effort (X̅=11.61, SD= 2.30), family life difficulty (X̅ = 35.19, SD = 8.80) and view of condition impact (X̅ = 29.12, SD = 4.38). 2. Demographic factors of the family, namely siblings, family structure, and usual residence, had no statistical correlation with family management in any aspect (p >.05). Social support showed a statistically significant positive correlation at a moderate level with child’s daily life (r = .50, p < .01), had a statistically significant positive correlation at a high level with condition management ability (r=.51, p < .01) and showed a statistically significant negative correlation at a moderate level with family life difficulty (r =- .34, p < .01). However, social support had no statistical correlation with condition management effort and view of condition impact (p >.05). The findings of this study provide preliminary information of family management and factors related to family management among caregivers of children with congenital heart disease after cardiac surgery. Nurses may use this information to provide social support to caregivers. As such, caregivers may have appropriate family management to care for children after cardiac surgery.
