Abstract: | The aim of the thesis is to study the interpretation of the social dimension in Theravada Buddhism and to find the identity of social dimension in Theravada Buddhism also to apply such identity in solving social problems. It is a documentary research presented in a descriptive way. From the study, it was found that the identity of social dimension Theravada Buddhism is twofold. Firstly, Buddhism is for social reform in the sense that Buddhism encourages people toward self-development and one can reach the ultimate mindfulness and contentment while one is still alive. Secondly, Buddhist teachings pay attention to social dimensions as, for example, found in Sigālovāda-sutta which refers to six quarters as the ethical codes that people should practice in reciprocal way. In the respect of solving social problems, Theravada Buddhism proposes two resolutions. Firstly, to have oneself well-protected can be made by observation of the precepts, for monk or layman, depending on one capacity, also to cultivate mental development by practicing meditation which can cause one to be well-protected. Secondly, to devote oneself to social benefit, one has to realize one’s role in society, such as monk’s or layman, then apply the appropriate role for oneself according to the Buddha’s teaching, practice with perseverance and sincerity. |
