Abstract: This qualitative study purposed to study self-care, both in health and in illness, of people with physical disability in Sansainoi Sub-district, San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province. A semi-structured interview which developed from literature review was used to collect data from 17 participants by purposive sampling. Data collection included general information, the meaning of physical disability, self-care in health and in illness of people. The researcher also observed their contexts and environments, including permitted to record their voice. Data analysis was adapted from the procedure Colaizzi's method. The results divided 17 people with physical disability into 3 groups which consisted of (1) people who spend time at home, (2) people who spend time in bed, and (3) people who can go to anywhere by themselves. The meaning of physical disability was different in each group. Eight respondents who faced the physical disability condition for a long time defined that their disability was normal for their daily life and does not affect for their livelihood. They adapted themselves and minds for living. Meanwhile, 9 people who just faced the physical disability condition described their disability in different meaning. They defined their disability as abnormality that was not able to do normal life. This meaning affected to their activities and minds such as increasing their stress and revolving around their disability. Thus, they had to depend on family, volunteers and health professionals. Meanwhile, self-care in health of all participants which included health promotion and disease prevention was determined by their daily life. Self-care in illness relied on the severity of disease. Decision for treatment related to their families and social network. The results from this study will be useful for developing health promotion plan, disease prevention plan and supporting health and government systems for people with physical disability in Sansainoi Sub-district, San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province.
