Abstract: This article attempts to use the location-allocation problem to decide the location of the pharmacy as a hub for dispensing medication instead of directly postal sending to the patient in the urban area of Chiang Mai, Thailand, to improve the quality of service and reduce the shipping cost of the hospital. The binary linear programming mathematical model has been conducted to calculate the proper location of the pharmacy to minimize the patient’s travel distance. The mathematical model has been solved using OpenSolver software, then calculate the shipping cost by the selected pharmacy that retrieved from the mathematical model result. The result shows that the hospital can reduce the shipping cost by up to 84.18%, but some patient might have to travel up to 6.27 kilometers to receive their medicine. On the other hand, if the maximum patient travel distance has been set to not more than 3 kilometers, the shipping cost reduction will subside to 50.50%. In addition, the sensitivity analysis shows that even if the shipping cost per unit has been raised to 2.4 times over the current rate, dispensing medicine via pharmacy will still reduce the shipping cost.
