Abstract: | Alcohol dependence can be caused by physical, cognitive, and behavioral abnormalities which impact people’s work life in society. Therefore, reducing or stopping drinking is important for this group of patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of implementing the brief version of the Phonelink program among persons with alcohol dependence in Nabuo sub-district health-promoting hospital, Udon Thani province, during January to March 2023. The 36 participants were purposively selected and included 16 persons with alcohol dependence, 16 relatives or caregivers of persons with alcohol dependence, and 4 healthcare team members who worked at Nabua sub-district health promoting hospital and implemented the program. The instruments used in this study were: 1) the brief version of the Phonelink program (Sethabouppha, Rasamisuwiwat, and Thepprasong, 2015); 2) a demographic data questionnaire for participants; 3) the Alcohol Use Disorders Identifications test; 4) the Timeline Follow Back; 5) the readmission data record form in the hospital database system (Nabua sub-district health promoting hospital); 6) the Opinion of Persons with Alcohol Disorders questionnaire; 7) the Opinion of Caregivers of Persons with Alcohol Disorders questionnaire; and 8) the Opinion of Health Care Team Members questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of this study revealed that: 1. After one month of attending the brief version of the Phonelink program, the persons with alcohol dependence decreased their heavy drinking days from 12.12 days to 7.31 days, and stopped drinking days increased from 9.5 days to 13.5 days. 2. After one month of undergoing the brief version of the Phonelink program, 14 of the persons with alcohol dependence reduced their drinking behavior, and none of them were re-admitted to the hospital. 3. All healthcare personnel were satisfied with use of the brief version of the Phonelink program for persons with alcohol dependence and agreed with all dimensions of perception that the program benefits their practice, the persons with alcohol dependence, and those persons’ relatives. The program was appropriate for practice in the organization, and there was overall satisfaction with the program as implementation. 4. All persons with alcohol dependence who attended the brief version of the Phonelink program were satisfied with all aspects and felt that this program benefited them in reducing or stopping their drinking; satisfaction with the program was at the highest level. 5. All relatives of caregivers of persons with alcohol dependence who received the brief version of the Phonelink program were satisfied with receiving the program in all aspects including benefits for themselves, benefits for the persons with alcohol dependence whom they were taking care of, and convenience in receiving care; satisfaction with the program was at the high to highest level. The study findings indicated that all persons with alcohol dependence undergoing this brief version of the Phonelink program could change their alcohol-drinking behavior in a positive direction, both in reduction of heavy drinking days and hospital re-admission rates. Therefore, the implementation of the brief version of the Phonelink program should be expanded in the public health care system. |
