Abstract: | The objective of this study is to examine graduate's and employer's expectation and satisfaction towards the undergraduate program in Geology, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. Two sets of questionnaires were separately used to collect data from graduates and employers. The first questionnaire was generated according to Internal educational quality assurance, which is comprised of 6 components: (1) Standard Control, (2) Graduates, (3) Students, (4) Instructors, (5) Curriculum for Learning and Teaching, and Learner Evaluation, and (6) Learning Supports, and was collected from 206 graduates who graduated in the academic year between 2015- 2020. The second questionnaire was set to evaluate employer's expectation and satisfaction from 86 employers under the framework of Thai Qualifications Framework for Higher Education with the expected learning outcomes of students in 5 domains: (1) Ethical and Moral Development (2) Knowledge (3) Analytical and Cognitive Skills (4) Interpersonal Skills and Responsibility (5) Numerical Analysis, Communication and Information Technology. Then, the data was analyzed by descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and used the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) scheme in order to compare graduate's and employer's expectation and satisfaction toward the undergraduate program in Geology, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. The results of graduate's expectation and satisfaction showed that the largest number of respondents were graduates who graduated in the academic year 2015 (22.33%). Private sector employee was the majority of graduate's occupational status (29.61%). Around four in ten of the respondents have been working or studying in higher education for 2-3 years (39.81%). Most of the respondents held a Bachelor's degree as the highest education level (88.35%) and earned a salary in the range of 15,000-18,000 baht (30.10%). The results also indicate that there were a slightly higher number of male graduates (54.85%) to female graduates in this survey. More than half of respondents (50.97%) graduated with an accumulated grade point average (GPAX) of 3.01-3.50 in the Bachelor of Science, Geology Program. According to International educational quality assurance containing 6 components, the surveys of the graduates' expectation and satisfaction towards the undergraduate program in Geology were analyzed. The level of expectation and the level of satisfaction were mostly very expected and satisfied in six components. The results of using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) scheme to compare the level of expectation and satisfaction of graduates resulted in the intersection of (3.85,4.33). Learning Supports component was classified in quadrant A which indicates that the graduates did not receive proper responses for educational supports. Instructors and Graduates component was classified in quadrant B indicating that it was both highly expected and very satisfactory for graduates. The component of Curriculum for Learning and Teaching, and Learner Evaluation was classified in quadrant C which means that these factors were not significantly important and can be postponed for improvement. Lastly, Standard Control component was classified in quadrant D and showed that this factor was overconcerned. The results of employers' expectation and satisfaction showed that most respondents were public sector employees (55.80%). Respondents were mostly in the position of supervisor (69.77%). In terms of work experience, the largest group of respondents has been working for 3-5 years (36.05%). Moreover, most employers held a Bachelor's degree as the highest education level (55.81%) and earned a salary in the range of 20,000-40,000 baht (67.44%). The male employers were accounted for almost three third of respondents (74.42%) and the group of age under 30 was dominant (43.02%). Most of the respondents worked or have been working with graduates who graduated in the academic year 2016 (32.56%). More than half of the employers worked or have been working with the graduates for 2-3 years (53.49%). These employed graduates mostly graduated with GPAX of 3.01-3.50 in the Bachelor of Science, Geology program (40.70%). In addition, the largest number of employed graduates held a Bachelor's degree as the highest education level (82.56%). The employers' expectation and satisfaction towards the undergraduate program in Geology were determined according to Thai Qualifications Framework for Higher Education with the expected learning outcomes of students in 5 domains. The level of expectation and the level of satisfaction were mostly very expected and satisfied in five domains. The results of using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) scheme to compare the level of expectation and satisfaction of employers led to the intersection of (3.94,4.22). The component of Analytical and Cognitive Skills was classified in quadrant A indicating that the employers did not satisfy with the level of analytical and cognitive skills of the graduates. Ethical and Moral Development and Knowledge component was classified in quadrant B as the graduates had a satisfactory level of ethical and academic skills. Numerical Analysis, Communication and Information Technology and Interpersonal Skills and Responsibility components were both classified in quadrant C which implies that these factors were not significantly important from employers' perspective and can be postponed for improvement. |
