Abstract: The purposes of this research were to compare the students’ English reading ability before and after using active learning and to study the students’ English writing ability by using active learning. The samples in this study were students from 3 classrooms of grade tenth students at Prince Royal’s College (High School) in Chiang Mai. They were 30 students chosen by simple random sampling out of 3 classrooms’ population. The research instruments inlcuded 6 lessson plans with Active Learning techniques for 18 periods, 50 minutes each period, English reading ability test in multiple choices for 30 items, and English writing assessment criteria. The data were analyzed for mean, standard deviation, percentage, and t-test (Dependent). The findings were as follows: 1. The students’ English reading ability increased after using active learning at s statistically significant level of .05. 2. The students’ English writing ability passed the pre-set criteria after using active learning.
