Abstract: | This research studied the inventory management system of a precast concrete distribution company that has four types of products which are prefabricated floor slabs, piles, square pipes and manholes. Each product type contains of many sizes which caused problems in warehouse such as product of mixed sizes were placed together, misalignment of products, and the difficulty in identification of each item number as it is difficult to read resulting in unsystematic warehouse management. This research aims to systematically improve warehouse management by using ABC Classification Analysis to classify inventory. In addition, inventory strategy theory and visual control were applied to design code and symbol that help to locate inventory item easier. Improvements that actually implement in the company started with ABC classification of top 4 product types with highest disbursement. Prefabricated floors of 88 types, piles with 120 types, square pipes with 35 types and manholes with 142 types were classified into group A, B and C based on frequency of disbursement. Improvements have been made by assigning codes and labels for visual control to make it easier to locate inventory. As a result, it helps to reduce the product counting time by 1.06 hours which accounted for 12.78 % reduction. In addition, guidelines for future improvements were proposed including the use of product separator and QR codes. Moreover, new inventory placement location was designed using the principles of which has designed. Three types of warehouses designed proposed. The first design allocates inventory group A, B and C with transverse arrangement. The second design allocate inventory group A and B to vertical row and group C to horizontal alignment. The third design relocate inventory based on their appearance. Prefabricated floors and piles of group A, B and C were assigned to vertical row, while square pipes and manholes of group A, B and C were allocated to horizontal row. Questionnaire was designed to evaluate the design with responder being the related personal from the company. The criteria used for evaluation include the ease of product counting, ease of finding products, convenience in placing and picking up products and adequate product storage space. The best layout with highest score was the second design and therefore suggested to be implemented in the future. |
