Abstract: | Objective: To investigate the influence of saliva contamination and different decontamination methods on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) between resin-resin interfaces. Methods: Fifty-four light-cured rectangular Filtek™ Z350XT resin composite shade A4 blocks were randomly divided into nine groups; G1 (control) was not contaminated, G2-G9 were contaminated saliva followed by various decontamination methods. G2 air drying, G3 rinsing and drying, G4 rinsing, drying, etching with 37% phosphoric acid, rinsing and drying, G5 drying, application of Clearfil™ SE Bond, G6 rinsing and drying, application of Clearfil™ SE Bond, G7 drying, application of Clearfil S3 Bond Universal, G8 rinsing, drying, application of Clearfil S3 Bond Universal and G9 rinsing and drying, etching with 37% phosphoric acid, application of Clearfil S3 Bond Universal. After the decontamination process, specimens were bonded with Filtek™ Z350XT resin composite shade A1. After water storage for 24 hours (37°C), all blocks were sectioned into beam configuration with a cross-sectional area of approximately 1 mm2. Specimens in the etch group were divided into two subgroups (N=15). Microtensile bond strength test and failure mode analysis were conducted immediately after water storage for subgroup A and after 10,000 thermocycling for subgroup B. All data were analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and followed by Dunnett’s T3 multiple comparison test (p<0.05). Results: The saliva contamination of resin-resin interfaces exhibited effects on µTBS. Both before and after aging, the control group showed a significantly higher µTBS than other groups that were contaminated by saliva. Among the contaminated saliva groups, the group which was decontaminated by etching with 37% phosphoric acid (G3) showed the highest µTBS. While the µTBS of all Clearfil™ SE Bond and Clearfil™ S3 Bond Universal (G5-G9) showed lesser µTBS than the groups that were decontaminated without using adhesive. Conclusion: When saliva was contaminated between resin-resin interface, the decontamination process through rinsing, drying, and etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds provided the highest µTBS, both before and after thermocycling 10,000 cycles. |
