Abstract: | This research aims to improve the dyeing and functional properties of cotton fabrics dyed with bastard teak flowers using bio-mordant and fiber treatment agent. Oolong tea extract and β-cyclodextrin were used as bio-mordant and fiber treatment agent, respectively. The effects of bio-mordant and fiber treatment agent in dyeing with bastard teak flowers using exhaustion dyeing and pad batch dyeing methods on dye exhaustion, color strength, color coordinates, chemical properties, morphology, color fastness to washing and light, UV protection properties, and antibacterial property were examined. The results showed that the exhaustion dyeing method using oolong tea extract as bio-mordant gave a color strength of 2.85, color fastness to wash at level 3 (moderate), and color fastness to light at level 4-5 (fair-good), which is at the acceptable level of Thai community product standard. The results were similar to those using metal mordants. Therefore, oolong tea extract may be the better alternative to conventional metal mordant. In addition, fiber pretreatment with 5%owf β-cyclodextrin and using the pad batch dyeing method gave a maximum color strength of 7.77 and good color fastness properties. SEM studies revealed the surface modification and the presence of layers on the cotton fabric, which might be β-cyclodextrin, bio-mordant, and dyes moiety. The UV protection properties of cotton fabrics had been markedly enhanced as compared to the neat cotton fabrics when using oolong tea as a bio-mordant and β-cyclodextrin as a fiber treatment agent. They revealed an excellent protection category. However, they did not show antibacterial properties. |
