Abstract: The traditional handwoven fabrics of the Thai Phuan community are significant examples of cultural capital with potential to boost the local and national economies. This research aims to 1) explore the background of traditional fabric production in Ban Thung Hong, Phrae Province, Thailand; 2) examine the current circumstances and identify problems with traditional Thai Phuan fabric production at Ban Thung Hong; and 3) develop the naturally dyed indigo products created at Ban Thung Hong. The investigation is a research and development (R & D) emphasising action learning, documentary analysis and field study. Initial observations and consumer surveys suggested the need for product development and modernization of product designs. Consequently, a practical workshop was organized in product design and development using a large 100-inch loom. The course lasted seven days, until the weaving group members were able to weave sheet fabric that could be used to successfully create prototype bedding products. A prototype bedding product was created for sale.
