Abstract: This study measured the effectiveness of the Three levels of thinking and EIMA instructional method on the conceptual understanding of pure substances among Thai 7th graders. Baseline and post-instructional assessments were designed to measure the quality of students’ scientific explanations of physical phenomena, and a rubric was used to score open-ended responses. Data were analyzed using normal distribution statistical methods including paired samples t-test. In the baseline assessment, 45.93% of students responses were rated at level 1 (low level); 32.84% of student responses were rated at level 2 (intermediate); and 21.22% of students responses were rated at level 3 (advanced level). The post-instructional assessment showed gains in higherorder student understanding, with 15.96% of student responses rated at level 1; 56.53% of responses rated at level 2; and 27.51% of responses rated at level 3. The results of this study suggest that the use of the TLT/EIMA instructional method effectively increases the quality of 7th-grade students' explanations of pure substances. From this, it can be inferred that students' conceptual understandings of pure substances were improved as well.
