Abstract: Triage nurses must have knowledge and skills to accurately triage emergency patients. Online instruction is a method to improve the knowledge and skills of triage nurses. This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare nurses' knowledge and accuracy of patient triage before and after learning from an online instructional program entitled "Patient Triage with the Emergency Severity Index at the Emergency Department," which was developed by the researcher based on the lesson structure and contents of Promton's computer-assisted instruction (Promton, 2015). The participants were 23 registered nurses working in the emergency department of four Army Affiliated Hospitals. The study was conducted from April 2019 to May 2020. The Adult Learning Theory was used as this study's conceptual framework. The instruments used for data collection included the Knowledge Test regarding Patient Triage at Emergency Department which was a part of Promton's computer-assisted instruction and the Patient Triage at Emergency Department Accuracy Score Record From which was developed by the researcher. The Knowledge Test was checked for reliability and yielded a Kuder- Richardson 20 of 0.80. The accuracy scores were counted from the match between each participant's triage of 20 patients and the triage of the same patients from the researcher and 2 experts. Descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Signed-Ranks Test were used for data analysis. The findings were as follows: 1. The participants' knowledge scores after studying online instruction (median 14.00) were statistically significantly higher than the scores before studying (median 10.00, p < .001); 2. The participants' patient triage accuracy scores after studying online instruction (median 15.00) were statistically significantly higher than the scores before studying (median 11.00, p <.001). These findings reveal that online instruction can improve nurses' knowledge and skill in patient triage at the emergency department.
