Abstract: | This research had the objective of studying the saving patterns and factors affecting the saving of the informal workers in Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai Province. There were 6 patterns of savings: with a commercial bank or a specific purpose bank, with the funeral welfare group, a community savings group, the social security by Section 40, chit funds and buying insurance. Questionnaires were distributed to a sample group of 320 informal workers in the research location, 80 people who worked in business, construction, general hired laborers and agriculture. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and the factors affecting the saving were weighed by the Likert Scale. The study results showed that most of the sample were female, 38 years old on average, married, having a primary education or vocational education certificate with an income between 10,000 -15,000 Baht per month or an average of 10,489 Baht a month. Most of them made a savings deposit with a commercial or specific purpose bank, an average of 5,615 Baht per person per month. The factors influencing their saving the most was for emergency need followed by advertisement or promotion of some financial institutes. The funeral welfare fund was also popular, where 245 of the workers in the sample group paid a monthly average of 110 Baht per person per time owing to the factor that they could get money from the fund for their funeral expenses followed by getting some welfare money for their family members after they died. Moreover, 112 people in the sample group made a saving with the community savings group of 1,350 Baht per person on average mainly to get a loan privilege, followed by savings for emergency need. In addition, 47 people in the sample group bought insurance at an average of 1,485 Baht per person mainly for life protection and for certain benefits respectively. At the same time 45 of the workers joined the social security program according to Section 40 with the top factor or incentive being saving for their use in old age followed by being entitled to some basic privileges provided by the government. And 39 people engaged in a chit fund in which each had to pay about 659 Baht per the agreed cycle mainly due to being persuaded by the leader or manager of the group followed by wanting to make a profit from the arrangement. |
