Abstract: | © 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. The anaerobic process has been widely adopted for the treatment of high-strength wastewater because of several inherent merits. This chapter provides an overview of bioreactor design and development, especially for the treatment of industrial effluents. Various considerations on the anaerobic treatment of industrial effluents are discussed. Strategies for decoupling solids retention time from hydraulic retention time are also presented. Various anaerobic reactor configurations and design and development are also presented. The chapter concludes with perspectives on where some of the research needs remain. |
