Abstract: | Stroke patients are limited in their ability to provide self-care, having high risks for complications, especially pressure sores. Caregivers are important in providing care to prevent complications. This quasi-experimental study aims to compare mean scores for pressure ulcer prevention behavior in people having had a stroke in a community before and after receiving a program, and between an experimental group and a control group. The sample were 50 caregivers for patients having had a stroke in a community, divided into 24 caregivers undergoing the program and 26 receiving normal nursing care. The research tools included a family support program developed by the researcher based on House’s social support approach (1981). Data collection tools include a general information questionnaire and a questionnaire on pressure ulcer prevention behaviors in stroke patients. The content validity index (S-CVI) of the tools was 0.80, and reliability, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, produced a value of 0.91. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and comparative statistics. The results showed that the experimental group, who received the family support program for 8 weeks, had a mean score of 71.50 (S.D. = 8.21) for prevention behaviors in stroke patients, which was significantly higher than the pre-program score of 47.96 (S.D. = 14.39; p < .001). The group receiving the program also had significantly higher scores compared to the group receiving normal nursing care with a mean score of 59.25 (S.D. = 8.06; p < .001). This result demonstrates that the family support program can effectively promote pressure ulcer prevention behaviors in stroke patients among at-risk populations in a community, reducing the pressure ulcer prevention behavior in people with cerebrovascular disease. |
