Abstract: Promotion of health literacy is essential for elderly monks with hypertension to be able to manage their conditions well and keep their blood pressure at an appropriate level. This experimental research aimed to study the effectiveness of PITS and technology-based education to promote health literacy among elderly monks with hypertension. The sample group consisted of elderly monks diagnosed with hypertension who received care at Health Promoting Hospitals in Mueang Nakhon Sawan district, Nakhon Sawan province. Fifty-four participants selected by simple random sampling were divided into a control group and an experimental group of 27 each. The experimental group received four sessions of group teaching and one session of individual teaching over a span of three weeks, while the control group received usual care. Data collection instruments included 1) an interview form on personal and illness data, 2) an interview form on health literacy for elderly monks with hypertension, 3) an interview form on self-management behaviours of elderly monks with hypertension, and 4) an automatic blood pressure measurement device. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, and the dependent t-test. The results show that the elderly monks with hypertension who received PITS and technology-based education had significantly higher mean scores for health literacy than those who received usual care (p < .01) and the scores after receiving teaching were higher than the pre-teaching scores (p < .01). Regarding self-management, the experimental group’s mean scores were significantly higher than the control group’s (p < .01), and they were higher than the pre-teaching scores (p < .01). Also, the experimental group had a significantly lower in mean blood pressure than the control group (p < .01), and their mean blood pressure was significantly lower than the pre-teaching period (p < .01). The results show that PITS and technology-based education are effective in improving health literacy and self-management and result in lower blood pressure levels. Healthcare professionals can apply PITS and technology-based education for health literacy promotion among elderly monks with hypertension for improvement in health literacy and self-management to control blood pressure levels.
