Abstract: This study aimed to 1) study the process of building understanding about positioning processes of Chiang Mai University to permanent university officers, lecturer classification 2) study problems and obstacles during positioning processes of Chiang Mai University 3) study guidelines for upgrades and development of positioning processes of Chiang Mai University. This study used qualitative research method with data collected from persons who are related to positioning processes of Chiang Mai University. There are 2 types of tools used; 1) in-depth interview from informants from 3 different levels, policy level, operation level, user level, 2) group interview which collected data from informants in operation level. The result was found that 1) Chiang Mai University has been building understanding in the past by hosting training or seminar projects, providing summary reports and officers who are responsible for inquiries to be prompt for questions. 2) problems and obstacles found were communication, time limitation, understanding of rules and officers’ operation 3) guideline for upgrades and development of understanding that is efficient includes communication, policies guided by administrators in university level and department level, providing knowledge, coaching system within the section, and creating network. The author suggested 2 solutions; 1) the university should focus more on the importance of communication process between officers and those who request for academic positioning, including post-assessment after building precise understanding together 2) tools that support understanding creation process should be various and easily accessed to users.
