Abstract: The ineffective couple’s communication skill is one factor caused by heavy drinking behaviors of patients with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). These behaviors tremendously affected patients with AUD, their family, and society. In this quasi-experimental research, two groups were measured before and after an experiment. The objective of this study was to study the effects of the Effective Couple’s Communication Skills Enhancement (ECCE) Program on the alcohol drinking behaviors of patients with AUD. The sample included 24 pairs of patients with AUD and their spouses. By using simple random sampling and drawing lots, they were split into 12 pairs in either an experimental group or a control group. The instruments consisted of 1) the personal information questionnaire, 2) the Alcohol Screening Test, and 3) the Effective Couple’s Communication Skills Enhancement (ECCE) program. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and dependent t-tests. The study found that: 1. One month after receiving the ECCE program, the experimental group's average score on drinking behaviors of patients with AUD was statistically significantly lower than before receiving the program (p < .01) 2. One month after receiving the ECCE program, the average score on drinking behaviors of patients with AUD in the experimental group was statistically significantly lower than that of the control group (p < .01). According to the results of this study, it appeared that the ECCE program is capable of changing drinking behaviors, and is, therefore, a useful therapy and an alternative treatment for patients with AUD receiving inpatient treatment, in reducing alcohol drinking behaviors.
