Abstract: | Elderly stroke survivors with good self-management will reduce disability and complications, and prevent recurrent strokes. This correlational descriptive research investigated health literacy, selfmanagement, and the correlation between health literacy and self-management in elderly stroke survivors. The participants were 88 older persons, diagnosed with ischemic stroke for 6 months or longer, who received treatment at a Sub-District Health Promoting Hospital from August to October 2021. Research instruments for data collection included the Personal and Illness Information Questionnaire, the Health Literacy for Elderly Stroke Survivors Questionnaire, and the Self-Management for Elderly Stroke Survivors Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results showed that the health literacy scores among elderly stroke survivors were moderate (x̅= 39.56, S.D. = 7.89). The self-management among elderly stroke survivors were high (x̅= 93.60, S.D.= 9.81). Health literacy was positively and statically correlated with self-management at a moderate level (r = .386, p = .001). The results of this study provide the basic information for health professionals to support selfmanagement through promoting health literacy among elderly stroke survivors for enhancing health literacy. |
