Abstract: Background : Core stability exercise improves spinal stability and reduces chronic low back pain. The cause of chronic low back pain is due to the major muscles of spinal stability that lack muscle strength or decrease function. Several studies of core stability exercise used abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) and abdominal bracing (AB) exercise for studies the core muscle thickness that improved spinal stability by ultrasound imaging. However, there have been lack of research to compare ADIM and abdominal bracing exercise in functional positions (sitting and standing position). Objective : The aim of the study was to investigate thickness of transverse abdominis (TrA), internal abdominal oblique (IO) and external abdominal oblique (EO) during ADIM and abdominal bracing exercise in sitting and standing positions by ultrasound imaging. Methods : Twenty-four healthy volunteers without low back pain (12 males, 12 females) were assessed lateral abdominal muscle thickness by ultrasound imaging in sitting and standing position while perform ADIM and abdominal bracing exercise. Each position was measured 3 times, and evaluated by ImageJ program. Results : In both positions, muscle thickness during ADIM were statistically greater than abdominal bracing (p<0.05). The abdominal bracing exercise in sitting position showed statistically significant greater in muscle thickness than standing position (p<0.05), but ADIM were not different in muscle thickness between positions. Conclusion : This study shows that the ADIM and abdominal bracing may improve spinal stability in sitting and standing positions. The abdominal bracing exercise can better activate core muscles in sitting position. The ADIM can activation of core muscles in both positions, and better than abdominal bracing. Suggestion that core muscles training can be prescribed by physical therapist in clinical setting. ADIM can be a foundation exercise for core stability, and may consider abdominal bracing exercise for people who perform functional activity in sitting and standing position.
