Abstract: This is an independent study on the conservation and reproduction of traditional shadow puppetry in Ban Khuan Maphrao, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province. This is study aims to research the history and format of shadow puppetry in Southern Thailand, as well as the community of Ban Khuan Maphrao and the culture and processes related to shadow puppetry, including the problems affecting the art form in Ban Khuan Maphrao, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province. Studying field documents and conducting interviews and non-participatory observation were used as methods to analyze and synthesize information to find suitable ways to manage conservation and reproduction of the traditional shadow puppetry art of Ban Khuan Maphrao, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province, in order to sustain the cultural form. The management guidelines were developed in accordance with the following concepts and theories: 1) management of cultural resources, 2) conservation of cultural heritage, 3) public participation. This independent study used these ideas and theories as applicable guidelines for finding appropriate forms and processes for the conservation and reproduction of traditional shadow puppetry in Ban Khuan Maphrao, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province. The results show that shadow puppetry has been an important and unique form of recreation for the people of Southern Thailand since ancient times. The unique art form comes from the creative combination of ancient Malaysian culture and local Southern Thai customs that has been passed down through generations of local people until the present. The art form was first enjoyed by the people of Ban Khuan Maphrao, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province, and has since become very popular with people in the community. Through shadow puppetry, local people can witness the mastery of the artist and the beauty of the figures projected onto the fabric screen caused by the shadow of the carved shapes. In this way, it is clear that shapes are very important to the art form, making the artist a very important aspect of the shadow puppetry. Today, however, the important of the puppeteer has diminished as the situation has changed and technology has impacted the lives of people in the community, which could result in shadow puppetry disappearing all together. Therefore, it is important to promote the conservation and reproduction of traditional shadow puppetry by providing the community with knowledge about effective management processes and organizing a learning center in order to educate young people and help them understand the value of the traditional art form and how to maintain traditional shadow puppetry within the community.
