Abstract: Long term of modification of muscle tone in patients with chronic stroke includes imbalance of postural control, decreased range of motion (ROM), decreased muscle flexibility and limited activity in daily living. This study aimed to investigate the effect of myofascial release technique (MFR) on balance performance in patients with chronic stroke. This was a cross over design. Fourteen participants were enrolled in this study, and received MFR technique at hamstrins, gastroso-soleus muscle and plantar fascia, incorporated with physical therapy training or physical therapy training only. Each program session was 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Balance performance was evaluated by Berge Balance Scales and Timed Up and Go test. ROM of hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion were measured using a goniometer in affected side. These outcome measures were assessed before and after the training. The result showed that the patients with chronic stroke in the MFR technique combined with physical therapy training group had significantly greater balance performance and higher ROM of hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion when compared to the physical therapy training alone (p < 0.01 for all). In conclusion, adding the MFR technique with physical therapy training could increase balance performance. This technique can be considered as an alternative therapy to improve balance in patients with chronic stroke.
