Abstract: A majority of critically ill patients who experience respiratory failure require mechanical ventilation. The loss of speech and communication abilities due to intubation can lead to emotional reactions among conscious patients, such as frustration, stress, and anxiety. Ineffective communication methods are time-consuming and inadequate to meeting all communication needs of both patients and nurses. This implementation research aimed to develop and implement guidelines for communication between nurses and intubated patients in a critical care unit of a university hospital. Participants of the study comprised 1) 30 ICU nurses and 2) 54 critically ill patients. The implementation study was divided into two phases based on the framework proposed by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The first phase was to develop practice guidelines and the second phase was to implement the guidelines. The outcome of guidelines implementation was communication assessment. Data collection was conducted with nurses and patients before and after implementing the guidelines. The number and percentages of nurse and patient participants who self-reported a good level of communication efficiency before and after guideline implementation were analyzed.
