Abstract

The purposes of this study were: 1) to analyze the system and the results of integrated area based management operation, 2) to study the problems of integrated area based management operation, 3) to analyze the way to improve integrated area based management operation in Doi Suthep – Pui National Park in order to achieve objectives. The study was a qualitative research. Data collecting instrument were semi- structured interviews. The target groups were 10 supervisors and 11 field staff of Doi Suthep – Pui National Park. The results of the study were as follows: The integrated area based management operation in Doi Suthep – Pui National Park was the operation with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and it was under the command of Protected Areas Regional Office 16. It covered 4 management zones. Its task was to coordinate with the Prevention and Suppression, Forest Fire Control, Tourism and Services, Restoration of Natural Resources and Environment, Academic Affair and to make a database of every dimension in the area of liability. Moreover, it was found that the integrated area based management operation in Doi Suthep – Pui National Park was very successful. It could reduce the complexity of the operations. Problems could be resolved quickly, especially in the early stage of working with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. The community was also involved in the operation, meeting, doing activities, and solving problems. Those activities included forest fire prevention, afforestation, seedling distribution, training, public relation, etc. However, it was the short-term operation. Nevertheless, there were some problems in the integrated area based management operation in Doi Suthep – Pui National Park. There were problems during operations and the desired results were not clear. They were also the lack of budget was used to support the operation as well as no monitoring system and continuous evaluation. For the ways to improve the integrated area based management operation in Doi Suthep – Pui National Park, the integrated management system should be defined to be clear in order to make those who involved in the operation understand their roles and duties. It should be stimulated and evaluated regularly. It should consider the results of operation for the morale of the workers. In addition, it should have budget allocation for each management zone in order to support the integrated management system.
