Abstract

This thesis, 'Sex in Cyborg' aims to study sex due to technological developments which turns humans into cyborgs. It was studied through surveying sex in four dimensions and in the scientific perspectives, sociocultural perspectives, technosexuality and philosophy, together with analyzed and compared with Donna Haraway's critical cyborg concept through content appearing in the movie, ‘Her’. The study found that Haraway used cyborgs as a metaphor for the breaking down of dualities. This characteristic appears on the character, Samantha, Os who does not have a human biological body but be able to have sex. Samantha according to Donna Haraway perspective, is a Cyborg by her ambiguity. There are several points, including: 1) have sex or not 2) human or Os and 3) being in real world or digital world. Those all characteristics lead to conclude that cyborg could have sex by comprehend and understanding the concept of sex through program processing which transcend physical being in real world. According to this assumption, making sex breaks through the limitations of one-on-one physical relationship pattern. Moreover, Samantha represents a breaking up duality of being physical body or non-physical body. Therefore, sex in cyborg opens up the possibility of sex that could be felt just like sex in humans and even exists everywhere without limit in the digital world.
