Abstract: The virtual synchronous generator concept is to control the inverter as a synchronous generator. It was developed to address the problem of system stability deterioration due to the increasing trend of electricity generation from renewable energy sources in the future. Most of the research on the virtual synchronous generator concept focuses on specific studies such as modeling studies, synchronization studies, and voltage regulation studies, etc. However, there is still a lack of study that integrates these techniques together into a single technique. This thesis presents the multi- function algorithm of the virtual synchronous generator that integrates various research techniques such as synchronverter technique, self-synchronization technique, voltage regulation technique, and parallel operation technique into a single technique that can operate in 5 operating modes: islanded mode, grid-connected mode, pre-synchronization mode for grid-connection, STATCOM mode for adjusting the voltage at the point of common coupling, and pre-parallel mode while working in a stand-alone system. A new block control and a switching condition flowchart have been presented. The techniques presented can increase the potential of virtual synchronous generators as well as be useful and more flexible to use in different situations. In addition, this method was validated by computer simulation and compared to computational mathematical equations.
