Abstract: | Upper Chaophraya Basin and some parts of the Salaween Basin and Mekong Basin were transformed into "Payap Circle" by the government of Siam in Bangkok during 1900s as part of the thesapiban administrative reform. The process of the production of space of Payap Circle was a colonial one. Since the Siamese ruling class transformed the space and its relationship from the old one, the principality to the new one that Siam ruled as absolute monarchy. This regime annexed the area to increase the political and economic benefits and the control of the new system of man power, which this research analyses through its spatial aspect. From the land survey and the production of space, this analysis examines three kinds of space; the city, the rural area and the forest and mountainous area. The effective mechanisms of surveillance, patrolling as well as providing services gave Siam a powerful image to Siamese subjects and other peoples, some of who were provided with new the economic opportunities. Meanwhile the Siamese elite still exploited the semi-free labor for their own benefits. Moreover, the Siamese government played the main in establishing the knowledge about the area's history, archaeology and. This power-knowledge became an important instrument rule. Finally this thesis will explore the everyday life in the the Payap Circle under the Siamese rule, the spatial practices of the people who negotiated, fought back, and did not surrender even though they had limited power for negotiation in the colonial space. |
