Abstract: This independent study aimed to study the level of happiness at work, to compare happiness at work, and to study the factors affecting happiness at work of generation X and generation Y operating employees in private service businesses in Chiang Mai province. Questionnaire was distributed to gather information from 200 respondents who were operating employees in private service businesses, 100 respondents were generation X who were born between 1965 - 1977 and 100 respondents were generation Y who were born between 1978 - 1998. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage and mean) and Inferential Statistics (Independent Sample t-Test and Multiple Regression Analysis) were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the overall happiness levels of generation X and generation Y operating employees were at the high level (x̅ =3.68 and 3.76 respectively). For the 11 domains of the happiness at work of generation X, 9 domains were ranked at the high level, namely achievement (x̅ = 3.87), the work itself (x̅ = 3.76), responsibility (x̅ =3.76), salary(x̅ =3.70), recognition (x̅ =3.69),job security (X=3.68), company policy and administration (x̅ =3.67), working conditions (x̅ =3.66), and interpersonal relationship with superiors (x̅ =3.65) while 2 domains were ranked at the moderate level, namely interpersonal relationship with subordinates (x̅ =3.41) and possibility for growth (x̅ =2.90). For the 11 domains of happiness at work of Generation Y, 9 domains were ranked at the high level, namely recognition (x̅ =3.90), working conditions (x̅ =3.90), responsibility (x̅ =3.89), interpersonal relationship with superiors (x̅ =3.89), job security(x̅ =3.80), achievement (x̅ =3.78), interpersonal relationship with subordinates (x̅ =3.73), the work itself (x̅ =3.59) and company policy and administration (x̅ =3.54) while 2 domains were ranked at the moderate level, namely salary (x̅ =3.49) and possibility for growth (x̅ =2.74). The results revealed that there was no significant difference between the overall happiness of generation X and generation Y (Sig.= 0.483). The results from Multiple Regression Analysis revealed that for generation X, job security (Beta = 0.343) explained 18.9% of total variance of happiness at work. As for generation Y, responsibility (Beta = 0.300), job security Beta = 0.283), company policy and administration (Beta = 0.267), the work itself (Beta = 0.265), working conditions (Beta = -0.169) and interpersonal relationship with superiors (Beta = 0.162) all together explained 76.3% of total variance of happiness at work.
