Abstract: Self-management skills in older persons with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis require health literacy. The objective of this descriptive correlational study was to explore health literacy, self-management, and the relationship between health literacy and self-management among older persons receiving hemodialysis. The participants in this study were 84 older persons with end-stage renal disease who were undergoing hemodialysis at 4 major hemodialysis departments in Chiang Mai. They were selected using the sampling without replacement technique. Data were collected during June to August 2021 using a set of questionnaires consisting of the Demographic Form, the Health Literacy Scale, and the Self-Management Behavior Scale for older persons receiving hemodialysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's product-moment correlation. Results revelated that older persons receiving hemodialysis demonstrated high levels of health literacy and self-management. Health literacy was significantly, moderately, and positively correlated with self-management (r = .55, p <.01). Findings from this study provide a basis for nurses and other health care providers to promote health literacy and self-management among older persons with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis.
