Abstract: | This research aimed to an appropriate method for extracting of bioactive compounds from silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) solid excrete (SSE). Two forms of SSE (fresh anddried) wereobtained from the fifth instarof Tubtimsiam 06 x Wanasawan variety silkworm. It was found that bothforms of SSE contained similar amount of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), which were about half in content as compare with that in fresh mulberry leaves. It was also found that the fresh SSE had chlorophylls and antioxidant activities more than the dried one. Due to high in bioactive compounds, the fresh SSE was selected to use as raw material in this study. For 6 log CFU/g reduction of initial microbial load, the high effective method was SSE soaking in hot water (95 degrees Celsius) for 10 minutes. Therefore, the method was used for bioactive compounds extraction at 1:5 w/w ratio of fresh SSE to hot water. The extracted SSE after filtration and cake separation, containedthe highest DNJ and total phenolic compound. The SSE extract solution was concentrated by using vacuum evaporator and added with 2 percent of silicon dioxide (anticaking agent), then the concentrated extract solution was dried and crushed into powder. Drying with hot air dryer at 70 degrees Celsius was suitable for the concentrated extract, because of the low production cost. From the selected processing step, it provided 6.91 ± 0.24 percent of production yield, 10.82 ± 0.425 mg/g sample of DNJ and approximately 7 folds of DNJ concentration compared to fresh mulberry leave. After filling the provided powder into No. 1 capsule (300 mg) and packing in sealed plastic bottle and storage in 5, 25 degree Celsius and room temperature (26-30 degrees Celsius). It was found that all storage temperature had similar a little bit of DNJ decreasing. From room temperature storage for 4 months, it was found that this extract powder had 8.58 ±0.76 mg/g sample of DNJ which was remained about 79.29 ±1.44 percent of the original extract powder. |
