Abstract

Proper self-management will reduce severity and deterioration of knee osteoarthritis in older persons. This correlational-descriptive research aimed to study health literacy, self-management, and the relationship between health literacy and self-management among older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis. The participants were 88 older persons diagnosed with stage III knee osteoarthritis who received treatment at Pathum Thani Hospital, Muang District, Pathum Thani Province, Thailand, from July to September 2020.The instruments used for data collection were the Personal Information Questionnaire, the Health Literacy Questionnaire in the Elderly with Osteoarthritis of the Knee and the Self-management Behavior Questionnaire in the Elderly with Knee Osteoarthritis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results showed that the mean score of health literacy of older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis was at a moderate level (x̅ = 40.97, SD = 8.56). The mean score of self-management of older persons with stage III knee osteoarthritis was at a moderate level (x̅ = 79.95, SD = 11.77). Health 1iteracy was statistically significantly positively associated with self-management at a moderate level (r = .341, P < 0.01). The results of this study provide basic information for nurses and health professionals for promoting health literacy among older persons with knee osteoarthritis to improve self-management.
