Abstract

This study aimed to 1) investigate the management styles of the Tonpao Town Municipality’s public space, 2) examine the nature of uses, classification, and elements of public space, and 3) to propose development guidelines based on the concepts of a sustainable city, classification of public space, and elements of good public space. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews and non-participant observation data collection methods. There were 23 participants from three groups: Tonpao town municipality administrators, community politicians and leaders, and public area users and stakeholders. The results of the study are as follows. 1) Tonpao town municipality did not fully implement the management styles according to the 8 core policies towards a sustainable city. 2) As for the use of public space, which could be categorized into 6 groups, there were both single and multi uses. 3) The public space that met the criteria was the multi use space. 4) In terms of the appropriate development guidelines, the quality of existing public space should be improved, and the creation of new public space should be promoted along with economic development. In addition, the goal should be aimed at a sustainable creative economy city, which should be in line with the provincial and national development strategies. Finally, the municipality should be ready to cooperate with all sectors to drive sustainable city policies to happen in a concrete manner.
