Abstract

Hypertension is a systemic disease that is often found in the older adults. These patients are treated with antihypertensive medications, which cause dry mouth. The objective of this research is to investigate the relation between antihypertensive medications and oral dryness in the older adults in Muang Tak district, Tak province. 164 older adults patients from Somdejphrajaotaksin Maharaj hospital, Muang Tak community health center, and Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital in Muang Tak district who either had antihypertensive drug treatment or not were included. Demographic data, duration, amount, and type of medication received were recorded. Dry mouth was evaluated by visual analogue score, clinical oral dryness score, and unstimulated salivary flow rate. There was a significant increase in visual analogue score and clinical oral dryness score, decrease in unstimulated salivary flow rate in the patient received antihypertensive drugs, compared with the patient who did not. Moreover, there was no significant difference among the patients treated with either one type of hypertensive drugs or combined drugs treatment. Antihypertensive medication can lowered the salivary flow rate that caused dry mouth in hypertensive older adults in Muang Tak district, Tak province.
