Abstract

The independent study on Symbolic Expressions in the Political Movement of the Youth in Chiang Mai Province, B.E. 2563 - 2564. The objectives of the study is to study the features and meaning of the signs including the political ideology presented by the youth in Chiang Mai. The research questions are ; 1) What is the form and meaning of political expression sign of youth in Chiang Mai? And 2) What political ideology is involved and pushed on the youth groups in Chiang Mai for political movement? This study is a qualitative research by using documentary research from news, articles, and social media about political expressions in Chiang Mai, together with in-depth interviews from people involved in the political movement of youth in Chiang Mai. The results of the study found that Chiang Mai youth protests created political expressions in cooperation with local political networks for initiating political issues movement. The demand issues are subordinated with the national movement and showed an interesting symbolic expression through artistic created by objects in everyday life. Furthermore, the artistic works are shown in different patterns in order to tell situations and problems in the society, as well as proposed political demands. There are four types of symbolic expressions, namely 1) ideological sign through the image of “Khana Ratsadon” (People's Party), 2) against political authority sign, 3) political struggle sign, and 4) related monarchical sign. The main objectives are created an ideology of resistance and challenge of the main occupied institutions in the society, such as government, police, military, political authorities, law, constitution, as well as the monarchy by creating social awareness among people to stimulate questioning of the existence of these institutions. The youths’ political activities in Chiang Mai created the atmosphere and the use of symbols to attract general public participation.
