Abstract: This independent study aimed to examine employee opinion towards the 5S system of Lamphun Feed Mill Factory, CPF (Thailand) Public Company Limited. The findings of this study shall be applied to improve and rectify existing problems of the 5S system implementation in the studied workplace to become more efficient. Questionnaires were used as the tool to collect data from 150 operative employees of the Lamphun Feed Mill Factory. Data obtained were analyzed by the statistics i.e. frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation; as well as the T-test independent. Most operative employees of the Lamphun Feed Mill Factory agreed that the 5S system brought positive impacts on the workplace environment i.e. a pleasant, safe, and hygienic environment, and on the employees i.e. safety improvement. The implementation of the 5S system could reduce the frequency and the severity of accidents at work while increasing productivity by minimizing waste and maximizing the well-functioning workplace. The findings also pointed out that the employees comprehended overall phases of the 5S system at a high level (with a mean score of 3.79), which correlated with their overall opinions towards the implementation of the 5S system which was observed at an Agree level (with a mean score of 4.18). According to the comparison between the level of comprehension on the 5S implementation process and the percentage of correct answers given in the test, the results revealed that the level of comprehension and the percentage of correct answers given in the test were correlated. Overall, the employees comprehended the process of 5S at a high level (with a mean score of 3.82); while earning a high level of percentage for the correct answers given to the 5S comprehensive test (with a mean score of 67.23). When comparing the scores on the 5S comprehensive test between the employees who attended and those who had never attended the 5S training in the past 3 years, the results demonstrated that those who attended the 5S training earned higher scores than those who had never attended the training at 0.01 statistical significance level. For the most effectiveness in implementing the 5S system in the workplace, the employees at all levels should pay their concerns and cooperate with all people involved in the 5S implementation. Regarding the 5S training arrangement, the workplace should provide at least one training program on the 5S system annually, of which the format should fit the real situation. Regarding the cooperation in implementing the 5S system, the employees of all levels should be involved in establishing standards for tool and equipment storage based on appropriate place of requirements. Regarding the knowledge distribution on the 5S system, the workplace should update news and information related to the 5S and distribute it through effective, diverse, and all-rounded communication channels. As per the suggestions for the 5S system improvement, the findings indicated that the employees should receive proper training on or be comprehended the key concepts of each 5S as follows. In the Sort (Seiri) step, the key concept included sorting unwanted/less required/unnecessary items; and eliminating items that were sorted out according to 7 types of abnormalities. In the Set in Order (Seiton) step, the key concept included comprehending relationships between S4: standardizing and S5: sustaining self-discipline; levels of 5S assessment being applied to all 4 phases. The findings also suggested that to sustain self-discipline in implementing the 5S system in the long run, knowledge distribution and communication on the benefits of the 5S implementation should be conveyed to all employees. In addition, co-creating a pleasant work atmosphere or environment and continuing the improvement through training arrangements and co-creating a pleasant work atmosphere of the environment should also be in focus.
