Abstract

This study on “Development of the San Kampheang Cooperative Village Project Mae On District According to His Majesty the King’s Initiative, Chiang Mai Province Towards Sustainable Development” aims to 1) study on the problems of the development of the San Kampheang cooperative village project according to His Majesty the King’s Initiative of sustainable development and 2) to study on the pathway to the sustainable development of the San Kampheang cooperative village project. The informants in this qualitative research consist of the community leader, staff working in the networking unit in the research area, and people involved in the project. The semi-structured interview and observation (both participant and non-participant observation) were applied for data collection. Moreover, the data was also collected from open places, group discussions, and documentary researches. The results show that His Majesty King Rama IX initiated the cooperative village project to help the poor agriculturalists who did not have their own lands to do agriculture. The sustainable development was the flagship of this project. Regarding the problems, it is found that the social aspect, economy, and environment are the three main aspects related to the sustainable development. Agreed by the informants, drought issue is the main problem for agriculture. However, it appeared that the San Kampheang cooperative village is ready as well as has more opportunities to drive the project according to the practical mechanism and development plan for land development. Human resource development is focused and connected with area conditions and economic development. The environment and natural resources in the area are also concerned. The cooperative works conformed with the working groups and covered all difficulties. Besides, the continuity of problem solving, human-based development and practical action plan are focused leading to the sustainable development.
