Abstract: | This study aims to examine factors affecting support for the Pak Bara deep-sea port project, in La-ngu district of Satun province, Thailand. The results provide insights to understand the perception of local residents on the project. A research model was developed under a concept of impacts of port operation and sustainable development. The model was developed to explain the endogenous latent variable (support for the Pak Bara port) and the exogenous latent variables (economics, environment, social and culture, logistics and technology, and trust). Primary data were collected from a self-administrative questionnaires from 310 residents in Satun province. The model was empirically tested using the Structural Equation Model (SEM). The model is statistically fitted to the data (goodness of fit index > 95 %). The results indicate that perceived impacts on environment, logistics, and trust significantly affect the resident supports (p < 0.05). A multiple group analysis shows that people in La-ngo district concern about social, logistics impact, and institutional trust, while the others are more interested in economics and environment impacts. According to the results, the authority should develop trust with the local residents as well as provide sufficient information on the impacts of the port to the locals in order to get their supports. The study also found that the perceived impacts on mega project related to infrastructure of locals and out siders can be different. |
