Abstract

Speech Act Analysis of Misunderstanding Conversations in the Novel The Judgment by Chart Korbjitti aimed to study the conversations that caused a tragedy life of the protagonist, Fak, in a Thai novel, The Judgment. The analysis is divided into two parts. First, Searle’s classification is applied to categorize 57 selected data from the novel. And the same group of data is also analyzed based on Grice’s the co-operative principle. The results represented that five types of speech acts according to Searle are found in the novel. There are 28 Expressives, 18 directives, 11 representatives, 2 commissives and 1 declarations utterance in The Judgment. Moreover, the co-operative principle from Grice showed that 50.87% of conversations in The Judgment consists of flouting maxims. It could be explained that people in the story purposely broke the co-operative principle more than being co-operative for effective conversations.
