Abstract: | This study aimed to 1) study how Rice Merit Network is successful in welfare provision 2) study the managing of the Rice Merit Network community welfare 3) study the processing of the Rice Merit Network development which is based on cultural capital 4) study the success of Rice Merit Network Fund Raising ceremony. The study was framed under the theoretical concepts of 1) Social network 2) Community welfare management 3) Cultural capital 4) Empowerment. This study was conducted through the qualitative research methodology of the “Mae Pon community”, Chom Thong district, Chiangmai province. All the data was collected by doing semi-structured interviews, with observation, as well as a study of the community’s history and relevant documents. The interviewees consisted of 10 people: 1) The founders of the Rice Merit network 2) The administrators of Rice merit network 3) The committees of the community’s welfare fund 4) The secretary officers of the social development center of the Chiangmai Diocese. The study showed firstly, that the Rice Merit network formation not only solved the community problem of rice shortage, but it was also distributed to the poor from other communities and the network community’s projects development. Secondly, the qualitative research manifested clearly that the Rice Merit Network revitalizes the traditional network and the social consciousness. The Rice Merit Network can blend harmoniously and helps the unity of the community. The members have gained dignity of community and local identity. The practices of Rice Merit Network also strengthen the community based on the cultural capital that transmitted the community’s value system, which enforced local power. Therefore Rice Merit Network becomes the symbol of a strong community, the community that can manage itself efficiently. In order to have sustainable network welfare, the researcher suggests that the network needs to have continued annual training programs for the youth, to transmit and preserve the community network. In addition, there should be an official office which can be a center of the networking activities, and keep systematically the network information, as a source of research in the future. This research and further study could be about the basic sources of the network which is based on the local cultural capital. |
