Abstract

Oral health is an important factor in maintaining good health among dependent elders. This developmental study aimed to develop clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for oral health care among dependent elders in Male Medical Unit 3 of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The framework for CPGs development proposed by The New Zealand Guideline Group (NZGG, 2001) was applied. The sample was selected by purposive sampling and consisted of a development team of 4 nurses and an implementation team of 11 nurses. The study was conducted from September 2013 to July 2014. The CPGs were validated by 3 experts. Data were collected using a CPG feasibility questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of study are as follows: 1. The CPGs for oral health care among dependent elders, Male Medical Unit 3 Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital were developed from evidence-based practice 20 evidences. The CPGs included four components: 1) oral health assessment; 2) oral health care; 3) oral care equipment and products; and 4) oral health education. The CPGs consisted of 17 recommendations of clinical practice. 2. The CPGs for oral health care was feasible to implement for oral health care among dependent elders in Male Medical Unit 3 of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. This study suggests that these CPGs should be used to promote oral health among dependent elders in Male Medical Unit 3 of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital to improve the quality of care for elders.
