Abstract: Nursing handover is a method to communicate important patient information from one shift to another in order to provide continuing care. The purpose of this developmental study was to improve the quality of nursing handover in a medical ward at Chiangmai Neurological Hospital using the FOCUS-PDCA continuous quality improvement process. The development consisted of 9 steps: identifying a process that needed to be improved; organize a team that knows the problematic process; clarify current process; understand causes of variation in the process; select the process that required an improvement; plan for improvement; implement the plan; check for practice process; and maintain and continue the improvement (Deming, 1993). The study population included 10 registered nurses. The research instruments were an interview guideline and an observation checklist regarding the practice of nursing handover. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results revealed that after using the FOCUS-PDCA process and SBAR method to improve the quality of nursing handover, registered nurses could perform more than 90 percent of nursing handover protocol. The incomplete steps were nurse who reported did not cover information in suggestion aspects; and for those who received reports, there were incomplete process in lacking of quick patient round before the handover process. Registered nurses were satisfied with the improvement of the nursing handover procedure. This study showed that quality improvement of nursing handovers using the SBAR method is effective and useful for the unit. As a result, nursing administrators can use these methods to improve the quality of nursing handovers in other units.
