Abstract: | Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a life threatening disease that causes enormous spiritual distress. Individuals who have CCA may have different spiritual needs. This descriptive study aimed to explore the spiritual needs of persons with CCA by using the Model of Spiritual Needs in Patients with Cancer developed by Taylor (2003) as a conceptual framework. Samples consisted of 267 persons with CCA who were treated at Sanpasitthiprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani province from November 2013 and May 2014. A Demographic Questionnaire and a Spiritual Needs of Persons with CCA Questionnaire were used for data collection. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the tool was .93. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results of the study revealed that: Fifty five point eight percent of the study samples had high level of overall spiritual needs. Considering each domain, the study results demonstrated that the study samples had high level in the domain of spiritual need associated with religion and divinity (72.30 %), finding the meaning and purpose of life (71.50 %), giving love to and receiving love from others (61.80 %), positive attitude and hope (61.00 %), and reviewing beliefs (51.70 %). Sixty six point three percent of the study samples had a moderate level of spiritual needs in terms of religious practice and 65.90 percent in preparing for death. Moreover, the sample of study reported that meaning in their lives was karma (34.10 %), religious taught (24 %) and sacred items (17.20 %). The study results provide preliminary information for nurses and other healthcare professions in planning support to meet the spiritual needs of persons with CCA who are admitted to hospitals, and enhancing their quality of life and spiritual well-being. Further study should be done to develop constructive interventions for responding to the spiritual needs of this sector of the population. |
