Abstract: | Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications of abdominal surgery because it often involves the lower gastrointestinal tract, which contains a large amount of normal flora. SSI leads to an increase in length of stay, cost, and morbidity. Therefore, providing education for nurses on preventing surgical site infection following abdominal surgery is crucial. This developmental research aimed to create a video resource for nurses on the prevention of surgical site infection following abdominal surgery. The sample consisted of 41 registered nurses who were working at a tertiary hospital in Nong Khai from October 2023 to March 2024. Research instruments included a development and design plan for the video media, a video media user opinion questionnaire, a demographic data questionnaire, a knowledge test on preventing surgical site infection following abdominal surgery, and a video media satisfaction questionnaire, all of which were validated by six content experts and three media experts. The content validity indexes of the pre-test, post-test, and the video media satisfaction questionnaire were .96, .99, and 1.00 respectively, and the reliabilities were .82 and .91, respectively. The efficiency of the video media was tested using one-to-one, small group, and field test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research findings revealed that the video media for this study included two sections. The topic of section one was surgical site infection following abdominal surgery which was comprised of the content about surgical site infection, surgical site infection criteria, and factors related to surgical site infection following abdominal surgery. The topic of section two included nursing practices for preventing surgical site infection following abdominal surgery. The efficiency of the video media was 1.35, achieving Meguigans’s standard criteria of 1.00. User satisfaction with the video media was at the highest level, overall, with high satisfaction for content (3.70 - 4.23) and design and presentation (3.87 - 4.50), as well as the highest satisfaction level for usability (4.73 - 4.80). The study results show that the video media increased nurses' knowledge regarding the prevention of surgical site infection following abdominal surgery. It should be disseminated among nurses caring for patients undergoing abdominal surgery in hospitals to enhance their knowledge and understanding, thereby improving quality of care and decreasing surgical site infections. |
