Abstract: This dissertation aims to examine the economic, social, and political transformations in Northeast Thailand from 2500 to 2550 B.E. Specifically, it investigates the repercussions on the Laotian labor force in the region. It analyzes their adaptive strategies in response to these changes. The study reveals that the expansion of state power and capital has led to significant exploitation and marginalization of the Laotian labor force in Northeast Thailand. However, Laotian workers have employed various strategies of resistance and negotiation. From 2500 to 2510 B.E., their resistance and negotiation tactics primarily revolved around “self-reliance” including silent protests, diligence, non-confrontation, engagement in religious activities, and forming new family units. In contrast, from 2520 to 2530 B.E., their strategies shifted towards collective action through social networks. This included forming groups to negotiate for better wages and benefits, communal cooking, and collective donations to temples. Furthermore, from 2540 to 2550 B.E., Laotian laborers adopted a different approach by emphasizing negotiation through governmental and non-governmental external organizations. Examples include participation in student groups and collaborative activities with community development organizations, primarily focusing on advocating for basic rights for ethnic minority workers. This research sheds light on the evolving strategies of Laotian laborers in Northeast Thailand in response to economic, social, and political changes, emphasizing the importance of understanding grassroots mobilization and external organizational support in negotiating for their rights.
